Luncheon: The Future of Vertical Farming

September 27, 2022 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM) (MDT)

Join us for a presentation on vertical farming and its future from owners and growers, Vertical Roots. Vertical farming is on the rise—It has attracted the attention of many as an option to address demand for local produce, food security, and more. Vertical farming is the agricultural process in which crops are grown on top of each other, rather than in traditional, horizontal rows. As commercial real estate owners and managers, vertical farming can be an option for your space. Learn more about how it works and what its future looks like in this month's luncheon.

Vertical farming expert and master grower, Mike Newhook has launched 2 larger scale aquaponics farms in Asia from 2017-2019. Mike and his wife, Becky, began working with their friends who were local farmers to educate and bring new ways of sustainable and profitable growing. He has worked with multiple consultants from around the globe and has completed thousands of hours of R&D to create the current prototype Vertical Roots Canada is working with.

They are the owners of Vertical Roots (VR). Currently, the grow space for VR is just under 2000 sq. ft., producing close to 1,000 heads of leafy greens a week with the ability to expand in the space vertically. The company's future vision is to have these farms, as well as smaller vertical farm models, inside commercial apartments, offices, day cares, schools, and seniors living communities. The idea is to have these farms act as a co-op for community associations, community groups, as well as create an ongoing opportunity to donate to local Food Banks that are desperate for healthy produce all year round.
