Candidate Profile As a member of the Structural team, the Design Engineer will be responsible for the structural analysis and structural design of building components. Types of structure include: critical infrastructure with post-disaster requirements, stand-alone or mixed-use retail, multi-storey wood-frame residential, schools, heritage and renovations, parking facilities, and recreation or resort facilities. The role requires a goal-oriented individual who is able to work independently with little supervision, and has the ability to focus and complete multiple tasks within specified time limits. Experience with concrete and steel is fundamental; experience with existing buildings, light wood-frame, mass timber, and/or masonry construction is an additional asset.


Key Responsibilities Primary duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Prepare detailed structural design of buildings including residential, commercial, institutional, and heritage projects. 
  • Assist with development of preliminary structural design concepts
  • Work with the project team from conceptual and preliminary stages of design through to construction completion
  • Assist with design checks for other engineers’ work (portions of projects)
  • Ensure quality compliance for your portions of projects by maintaining design/checking notes
  • Assist and mentor engineers-in-training with structural design tasks

Professional Qualifications & Experience 

  • Degree in civil engineering program from accredited university, completed with structural design and analysis electives.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as a P.Eng.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a structural engineering firm.
  • Knowledge of structural design in mid-rise wood frame, concrete transfer slabs, low-rise structural steel commercial.
  • Ability to conceptualize design load paths with an understanding of constructability.
  • Strong attention to detail to produce error-free, high quality output.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge with structural software SAP, SAFE or ETABS is preferred
