Board Director

Summary

Alberta’s public safety codes system depends on a strong partnership between Alberta Municipal Affairs and the Safety Codes Council. The fundamental goal of this partnership is to administer the safety codes system to ensure it is effective, accountable, comprehensive, and sustainable, and maintains public confidence in the system. The Council is governed and directed by a Board of Directors to support the fulfillment of the Minister’s role in the safety codes system. The Minister and the Board of Directors work together to maintain and enhance the safety codes system and are committed to ongoing development and continuous improvement of the safety codes system. The Minister and the Board communicate regularly and collaborate on planning, issues resolution, and other matters. With a focus on good governance, oversight, and leadership, the current Board seeks to fill two Director vacancies this year. The new Director(s) will add value to the Board through their governance and professional experience. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Safety Codes Council, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to offer valuable input and strategic direction, helping to advance the Safety Codes Council’s goal of keeping Albertans safe in the built environment.

Established by way of the Safety Codes Act in 1993, the Safety Codes Council is an independent regulatory body delivering programs on behalf of the Government of Alberta. Working alongside partners and stakeholders, the Council ensures that systems and structures are designed with safety in mind. The Safety Codes Council categorizes its activities into two primary services: 1) the oversight of safety codes such as permitting and inspections; and 2) the provision of safety recommendations from experts in our province.

Job Description

Key Accountabilities


Communication

    • Contributes to a compelling and inspired vision of the future that can be shared by all stakeholders;
    • Participates fully in Board discussions and Committee meetings; and,
    • Communicates appropriately with all individuals, particularly the members of the Board, Council, Council’s corporate organization, elected officials, Alberta Municipal Affairs staff, clients, and stakeholders of the Council.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:


Experience:

    • Previous governance Board experience is required.
    • Ten (10) years of leadership at the Executive level.
    • Exposure to an organization with a public interest focus, either regulatory or other public service agency.
    • A high level of integrity and exceptional reputation, both individually and within the area of their professional experience.
    • Solid and demonstrated understanding of the role, fiduciary responsibilities, and legal duties of a Board Member, board governance, principals, practices, and structures.
    • Institute of Corporate Directors Designation or a similar Board governance credential is preferred.
    • Experience in the construction, legal or innovation sectors is an asset.



Competencies and Attributes:

    • Exceptional ability to maintain and nurture relationships over time with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work towards goals within deadlines.
    • Professional maturity, with the ability to work through conflict and competing priorities in a measured, calm and collaborative way.
    • Demonstrated track record of professionalism coupled with the ability to make decisions that will be vital to the Board.
    • Exercise good judgment and recognize sensitive issues.
    • Models high ethical standards, integrity, acts honestly, and in good faith.
