Educational Seminar: Barrier-free, Accessible or Inclusive Design? Become a Design-for-All Ally

You may not be aware of how pervasive ableism continues to be. Nor how it surrounds us and is infused in our everyday activities. And I doubt you are aware of the impact it has both on you and on disabled people.

By this time, you may notice when, upon entering a building, that the ramp is located around the side of the building. Or that the button to activate the power-operated door is still broken after a week. Within our physical realm we see examples of ableism like these.

Ableism is pervasive throughout our popular culture in seemingly harmless ways. It might be the language we use or terms that we toss out. We rarely associate these throw-away phrases with ableism and hardly notice that we are using them.

At other times, we believe that our actions and attention are demonstrations of respect for and of people with disabilities. Our sentiments of reverence and inspiration seem filled with gratitude. In fact, they are detrimental. Until we stand back and look at their impact, our patronizing energy appears laudable.

When we start to open our eyes to understand the psychological impacts of social acts like these, we learn how they reinforce disability stigma and how they impact the ability for disabled people to live a high-quality of life.

PRESENTER

Lara Pinchbeck, Lara Pinchbeck: Research + Design

Through her research, design and advocacy, Lara Pinchbeck is an award-winning inclusive design specialist. As a socio-spatial researcher, she explores how people interact with their material environment. As a design anthropologist, she explores how design processes can continue to be more inclusive and to produce more inclusivity. As a Professional Accessibility Assessor, Lara works with designers and others to achieve high degrees of functional accessibility. As a Professional Human Ecologist, she focuses on how everyone can go about their everyday activities with the most ease and enjoyment. Lara Pinchbeck has a rich combination of education, practice, and lived experience including design studies (architecture + material culture), critical disability studies, user engagement, knowledge transfer, and evaluation. Most recently, she is traipsing through doctoral studies.

This event is eligible for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Points. One point per hour will be awarded.
